Coastal Georgia

Yall, I might not leave coastal Georgia, ever.  For years I have said that GA got ripped off.   They don't have a coastline like South Carolina or North Carolina.  Even Delaware, Maryland and New Jersey have beaches.

And then what happened to the Gulf coast?  Who was in charge of those negotiations??  Georgia gave away the pan handle to Florida.

All that is left are these barrier islands all chopped up.  Well, I was sadly mistaken.

We have been to Jekyll previously.  We have visited the Georgia Sea Turtle Center twice over the last eight years.  And in early March we took Sterling to Jekyll for a sandcastle morning.  Gary had just Googled a beach in Jekyll and we ended up on the south end at a soccer complex.  It was fine, but not outstanding.

We have watched two different YouTubers talk about Jekyll and bikes.  This has been on my "List" since we arrived in coastal Georgia.

Today was the day!

I knew I wanted to see Driftwood Beach so we would start there and head south.  I used the last of my homemade bread yesterday, so lunch out was something new for us on a bike day.  But I charted it out and had a plan.

Gary got up early, loaded up the bikes and the beach stuff.  I made pancakes, grabbed some snacks and off we went.

The first stop was Driftwood Beach.  I think it is spectacular.  The trees, all whitewashed and standing as silent sentries guarding the beach, are magnificent.  Gary was not impressed 🤣

We saw some dolphins close to shore, walked the beach a little, made my TC video and took some photos.

Back on the bikes we headed south.  Somehow we ended up on the trail next to the beach, which wasn't my plan.  But WOW.  It was a gorgeous ride.  I see the lunch place I had picked out...but it was like 10:00 am 🤣

I wanted to see the historic district so we found a road that cut over to the west side of the island.  This is not a large island – it is only 1.5 miles wide and 7 miles long.

Let me tell you, Jekyll has done a wonderful job with their bike path.  We spent very little time sharing the road with motorists.

We found our way to the path along the Jekyll River, took a short break on a bench so I could record another TC video and one for the grands.

We finally came across the historic district.  Wow.  My mind cannot comprehend the old money.

Some history, Jekyll Island was once a completely private island.  In the 1700s Jekyll Island was an exclusive winter retreat for the wealthiest families in America.  Families with names like Rockefeller, Morgan, Vanderbilt and Pulitzer, just to name a few.  In 1910 there was a secret meeting on the island of banking elites and the Federal Reserve was created.

Now a handful of these “cottages” you can rent by the room or in the entirety.

This is Jekyll Island Club Resort. This photo shows about ¼ of the actual building. It’s ginormous. #jekyllisland

We then made our way back to the east side of the island for lunch at 24 Coastal Grill.  You can see my review of the food on my  “Good Food” page.

Last venture on the bikes was a quick drive thru in Jekyll Island Campground.  This might be on a future agenda.

We went a total of 12 miles today. Loaded up the bikes and drove down to the beaches with facilities.  Jekyll Island really has made it simple for beach goers... restrooms, outdoor showers for rinsing, covered picnic tables for dining, they thought of everything.

Other than the $10.00 fee to get on the Island, this really is quite close to paradise.   But, if it was perfect, I wouldn’t need to long for heaven.

I love you deeply.  Please let me know how I can be praying for you.  ♥
