TC’s Adventures

I have been at the YMCA for almost 7 years. Outside of my day job, Human Resource Manager, I get to do some really fun things. I created a Walking Club with some really cool people that walk the RiverWalk in Columbus, GA every Wednesday. I also have inserted myself into the Summer Camp and Afterschool programs by reading to the kids.

See, I love books and I love kids. Seems like the perfect match!

Once I made my plans known to leave Columbus, GA and “hit the road”, our Director of Children and Youth Programming had an idea.

In the spirit of Flat Stanley, we created TC. TC is my Travel Companion. He will go on adventures with Gary and I and I will send videos back to the Afterschool students.

Follow along with TC as he experiences new things, new people and new places.

TC went to see the Riverwalk in Woodbine, GA. This Riverwalk runs along the Satilla River. The Satilla River is a 235 mile long river mostly running east and ends in the Atlantic Ocean south of Brunswick, GA. The Riverwalk is part of an expanding Rails to Trails Conservancy. The Riverwalk has two restrooms available. It departs from the river and traverses under a pretty canopy of live oaks.

Gary and I took Sterling and TC to the Hands On Children’s Museum in Jacksonville, FL. We spent hours and hours there. Sterling got to imaginative play in a fire station, grocery store, restaurant, puppet show, space shuttle, TV news set, veterinary clinic and a post office. The price is absolutely reasonable. The staff is friendly. We went on a holiday so there were a lot of kids there but there are lots of areas for families to spread out and have elbow room. If you are in or near the Jacksonville area, I highly recommend carving out some time for the littles. I would recommend for kids ages 3 - 8 ish.

TC had his first cycle outing. We ventured to Fort Clinch on Fernandina Beach. We paid $6.00 for a day pass but we had been looking for a safe and pretty place to ride our bicycles. We also wanted to explore the campsites available in this Florida State Park. We parked the car in a parking lot near the beach and then explored on our bikes for hours. We checked out the camp sites, saw the Fort from a distance, viewed the Cumberland Sound, observed two great horned owl owlets, and had lunch on the beach by the Atlantic. The canopy was gorgeous, the ride was mostly flat and traffic was not heavy.

I will talk more about this adventure in my blog, coming soon.

This week TC made his first trip to the beach. We went to Amelia Island, Fernandina Beach. We stayed for a little over an hour just watching the waves and the birds. We also took a walk on the beach. This is a beach were residents can drive their automobiles out onto the sand. I would be careful just WHAT automobile you choose though. You would not want to get stuck in the sand!

TC’s Adventure on St. Simons, Georgia

TC went exploring on St. Simon’s Island, Georgia. His first stop was Fort Federica. This is a lovely National Monument that is free to enter. The grounds are lovely and very educational. There is even a scavenger hunt for the kids. We very much enjoyed learning about the history of Fort Federica.

TC biked for 15 miles, had a picnic on the beach, ice cream and saw a lighthouse! We even found post cards to mail back to the After School kids at the Y!
