Providence Canyon

Want to see the Grand Canyon but only have an available weekend and you live in the SouthEast?  Well, let me introduce you to the Little Grand Canyon.  This is a state park tucked away in Southwest Georgia, it is also one of Georgia’s Seven Natural Wonders.

Providence Canyon State Park

In the 1800s settlers began aggressively clearing the land for planting cotton.  The soil is comprised of clay and sand and loam.   Poor soil management caused erosion and the results over time are the beautiful canyons.   The deepest canyon is 150 feet deep.  It is reported that the Canyon loses 3-5 feet along the upper rim each year.

The walk to the floor of the canyon, while not ADA accessible, is not an aggressive hike.  Anyone on the trail must be careful of the wash out and I imagine it is quite slick if the ground has any moisture on it.  We traversed it with a retiree, three adults, and three children ages 2-6.  The littles tumbled once or twice because their feet traveled faster than their bodies, but there were no major injuries and not even minor cuts.

At the bottom you will find water.  The kids wear their water shoes.  I wore sneakers I didn’t care about.  You can walk along gazing up at the high colorful walls and it really is something to behold. It is easy to see the different layers and the multitude of colors that comprise the walls of the canyons.  God is so creative and colorful.  To think this wonderful planet (and the others) just came be with a big bang is quite laughable.  Only a Creative God with a wonderful imagination could come up with so much wonder and beauty.

After exploring all of the glorious wonders of Creation you can hike back up the same trail and then observe the canyons from above.

There are pavilions with picnic tables for a picnic lunch and also a playground.  Restrooms   are available and are relatively clean.

I highly encourage you to take a trip to Providence Canyon to explore the magnificence and diversity of Georgia!
